New Orleans
New Orleans
Today was our last full day in New Orleans and it's strange how the trip has passed by both slowly and fast at the same time. #istimeasocialconstruct? Anyway, enjoy this healthy dose of Minhee via phone lens! I generally don't like smiling normally in photos and I think it's really funny to smile funny. ㅋㅋㅋ Allison and I slept in today and scoped out a breakfast restaurant called Toast! There we enjoyed coffee, a ratatouille omelet, and coconut cream French toast. The meal was gigantic and delightful and we stayed there for quite a while. I particularly liked the interior of the restaurant as it was cleaner and brighter than other places we had been. After feasting for a bit, we headed outside. Turns out we were conveniently right by the French Market! Here are some random shots taken both on the walk to Toast as well as around the French Market! The French Market reminded me of a lot less crowded Pike Place. Tons of merchants sported stands selling jewelry, hammocks, bags, prints, candles, etc. There were some swell leather bracelets I saw, but alas, they were quite expensive! After traversing through the goods, Allison and I walked towards the adjacent Mississippi River and gazed at it for a bit. Afterwards, we had beignets and hot beverages at Cafe Du Monde once more and savored the pieces of fried dough drenched in powdered sugar. Afterwards, we hit our hotel until our next festivity. After relaxing in our hotel room, we set off to Preservation Hall, a historical venue known for awesome live jazz! We headed there 30 minutes early and the line was still pretty long! Luckily, we were able to make it for the 5pm show. The venue itself was a small and dimly lit room. There were a few rows of seats for reserved tickets and some floor mats. There were no microphones for the band of seven. Just the space between our ears and their instruments. The room fit about 30-40 people? The band came on and proceeded to whip out some jazzy tunes. Typically the band would play together and then each member would launch into a solo. The leader of the band, wielding a powerful trumpet, would sometimes sing or introduce the context of the next song. The performance lasted about 45 minutes and was extremely enjoyable. I really loved watching all of the performers passionately play their instruments. All of them were older men and it was cool to see them still jam out. I feel like it will become harder for me to hold onto hobbies and interests I have now as I grow older. I hope to continue pursuing things that bring me joy and carry that onto adulthood! Allison and I enjoyed this experience. It was very intimate and raw. For the last song, the band had us do a call and response with them. Whenever the singer sang, "You rascal, you!" the audience would then echo, "You rascal, you!" It was fun! I liked having my voice be a part of a collective sound. Very cool. A 5-minute walk later, Allison and I ordered poboys at NOLA Poboys. I had grilled catfish while she dined on grilled shrimp. I think we were both getting sick of all the fried foods of New Orleans. We also shared tater tots (oops)! The cashier and I shared a small interaction in which I learned his grandmother went by Minnie, short for Wilhelmina(?). Nice. I was too lazy to explain that my first name is actually Rachel and that my name is actually spelled out Minhee and is Korean, but alas, hunger calls. I had a bite of Allison's shrimp and enjoyed that! It was quite flavorful. My catfish was okay. The texture was great, but it didn't taste like much. Also on me, as I only ate it with French bread and lettuce, removing the tomatoes, mayo, and pickles upon ordering. Dommage.
After munching on our poboys, we set back to our loyal hotel. Allison is getting quicker and quicker at unlocking our door (which requires the manual twist of a physical key). I unwinded by reading some of Michelle Obama's book, Becoming, watching Bojack Horseman, and taking a dope bubble bath. I can't remember the last time I took a bath at all. Overall! Today wasn't as jam packed as the other days, but still valuable in its own way. Looking back at these three days, I feel like Allison and I got a good taste of what New Orleans has to offer. Also! It's vacation! No need to rush through things and cram everything into everyday. Already, we are departing from Louisiana tomorrow! I'll be back in New Jersey in less than 24 hours, which is wack. Talk to you then! Peace out.

Welcome back! Peep my blogger self-portrait~ Today was quite a day. Let's dive right into it. Allison and I learned from our draining life forces yesterday and decided to eat more for breakfast. Once more, I ate grits, sausage, cereal, and coffee! I had another heaping portion of grits and it was yummy once more. After that, we hauled an Uber and set off to a swamp tour!
