Introducing our 2nd student spotlight: ~Dastardly dapper Dave~ Dave impresses me with his good outfits and style. While I am sporting slouchy shirts and pants, Dave wears a nice buttoned shirt tucked into some fitted pants, clean (and now slightly damp) shoes, a rocking watch, and sparkling earrings. Dave is one to both openly accept and deny attention, saying no to a picture yet posing anyway. Dave and I officially met at our first France study abroad meeting. Say less, yes? Oh and Dave is actually highkey good at French. Drip or drown? Major drip. Like waterfall drip. Millions of drips. Imagine the drip. We be in Nice! Wowee! Here are some fun group pics above before we begin. Here's cubing me and sleeping me. I hope you enjoy the dichotomy. Today marked the first day of a French holiday vacation weekend. The crew and I trekked to Nice via car-share and got here around 2PM or so. We wanted to scope out the beach, which is a 5-10 minute walk from our AirBNB. The water is so blue and there are rocks rather than sand. Nice is absolutely beautiful, like all other French cities so far, in its own way and with its own charm. We had sandwiches for lunch today! Remember the bread from the vibration test machine? I took like 3-4 loaves for this vacation weekend, hehe. At the grocery store, we purchased cold cuts, lettuce, cheese, etc. French basics. Did you know that 2 baguettes cost 0.90 euro here? Super wack. No wonder I see people carrying dozens of baguettes at a time. After decompressing and settling into our AirBNB, we explored the shores of Nice. Visiting the ocean at this hour was a different experience as the lighting, people, and colors were all different. The sun was starting to set and many buildings and such were cast with a really pretty glow. There were a ton of people walking outside, both young and old. A lot of cafes and small restaurants situated by the shore had outside patio areas to dine in. In general, I have noticed that many French (in Paris, Lyon, Le Puy, Nice, etc.) restaurants offer terrace seating, probably because there are actually beautiful things to look at outside, hehe. Dinnah!!! I was not very hungry, so I split a mushroom, cheese, and ham crepe with Sophia (she’ll have a spotlight quite soon). After eating til dark, we all enjoyed gelato. I had a scoop of hazelnut, my favorite flavor, and tiramisu. We headed back to our AirBNB where I couldn't open the front door for many minutes because I am incompetent (sorry Ty & Dave).
Reflecting a wee little, my experience in France thus far has literally been amazing. I still sit and wonder how I even got here and if this is real. Being in France has definitely taught me to appreciate its culture and language very much. Despite being here for 10 days and never having an inclination to learn French in the past, I have been eagerly learning new French phrases and words everyday. I took Spanish for many years throughout school, but never quite appreciated it, probably because I never used it. I think if I visited a Spanish-speaking country, I would really appreciate the culture and language much more. Now that I have traveled on my own, I think it would be so cool to do that and bring my brother along. My brother is 16 and is taking Spanish at his high school; I think at that age, it would have been fun to put my Spanish to use. I think traveling would really teach him to appreciate the Spanish language and all the history behind it much more. Me as well (or moi aussi, as I learned)! But anyway, I am really glad to finally have a space to relax and sleep in. I think I have been exhausted physically and mentally due to classes and traveling, but now is the time to chill out! Look forward to more beach bashes tomorrow - perhaps I will take a dip into the Mediterranean.
