5:01PM GMT: Bonjour friends & fam. My body is tired and my stomach is full, but I am content. The former half of the day was already packed with so much good stuff, that I must update le blog now. Then I will nap. ~Bon appétit!~ Annnnnyway, I grabbed a brioche au chocolat and a cappuccino from a nearby shop. It was yummy and fluffy, but I only finished half of it. I love me some leftovers!!! Today's first stop was the infamous Catacombs. I initially didn't plan to go (refer to previous blog post for road less traveled spiel), but decided to go after talking to some friends (thanks Rey) and pondering upon it. Paying extra to skip the line was the way to go, and I entered the Catacombs around 10:45AM or so. The whole experience was honestly very chilling (both literally and metaphorically). With my handy audio guide, I learned the origins of the Catacombs and some of the stories behind the bones. At first, the Catacombs didn't feel real. It didn't feel like the skulls and bones lining the walls were once real people who had families, jobs, hobbies, lives. I had to remind myself now and then to breathe. I didn't take a lot of pictures. In a way, I felt that it would be disrespectful to take pictures of the skulls and bones and glamorize them? To put that distance between us like lenses usually do? They were once living beings too, you know? I also found no need to take pictures. I don't think I'll ever forget the walk or the things I saw. It was a very unique experience. Instead, I took pictures of some inscriptions I saw. (Thanks Google Translate. Sorry for potentially butchering French-English translations.) I'm definitely glad I went. I traversed to Jardin du Luxembourg after exiting the Empire of the Dead. Nature granted me beautiful weather once more. For some reason, there are neat, trimmed, and nicely shaped trees everywhere in Paris. Neato. People-watching and soaking in the sun at the gardens made me hungry. I have always loved crepes since I was young - not sure why. I speculated that it was because in elementary school, I had a French classmate whose mom would come in and educate us on French culture via food. I think that was the first time I ever had a crepe and I devoured it. I scoured the interwebs and found Chez Imogène. My meal consisted of a small salad, a ham, cheese, and emmental savory crepe, a chocolate sweet crepe, and bubbly, sweet cider. All for 11 euro!!! Wack!!! Wonderfully made and absolutely delicious. The meal satisfied my nostalgic buds. Centre Pompidou! Cool art exhibition building - many school groups, lots of cute kids. The building is known not only for its exhibitions, but also for its design and construction. There are many colored pipes that line the outside of it. Some pictures include a transparent tunnel looking thing - those hosted escalators and allowed for some great views of Paris. All of the featured art was interesting - I just forgot how tiring it is to walk around and absorb everything around you. I was beat by the end of it and headed back to my hostel, where I now lay comfortably on my bed. More to come later! Time to play pre-nap Animal Crossing. Peace out. 9:34PM GST: Never got to play Animal Crossing. Sad. It's okay, I'll play it after my update. For the latter half of my day, I just had food. That was really it - too tired to peruse. Voila! Nothing too fancy. The hostel I am at is basically attached to this bar, so my hostelmate and I headed there for a quick bite. To be honest, my reasoning for going there was because I didn't feel like walking very far, heehee. I got a wrap and we shared a drink called Sex on the Beach... it's a cocktail with vodka, peach schnapps, orange juice, and cranberry juice (don't worry mom & dad, I'm good!!!). A lot of people at the bar were English-speaking and from the States. My hostelmate and I agreed that we felt like we were in America. We then d-d-dipped to a small ice cream store 15 minutes away. I got a mix of chocolate hazelnut and vanilla! Very yummy, the vanilla ice cream tasted more notably... vanilla.
Tomorrow, I'm outta here! It's weird that I've only been here for 3 days or so - it feels like I've been here for weeks (ish, just way longer than 3 days). I'm going to hit more spots in Paris tomorrow and then train to Lyon. Very exciting, yes?
